Making our roads safer for pedestrians

Tameside's roads are full to capacity with little thought to those who wish to walk or cycle in the borough. Many of the crossings are dangerous without pedestrian lights to make them safer. Some streets are little more than race-tracks with cars screeching down them at well over their speed limits. The Tameside Liberal Democrats want to make our streets safer for all of us and we will be pressing the council for significant changes.

Car Park Stealth Tax

This campaign started out in Ashton a few months ago as a plea on behalf of traders. Following the start of it, many people have taken notice of it (including the Conservative Party who also want in on it now!!!) so now it's a borough-wide campaign.

Car parking in our town centres is far too expensive, FACT!

To park on Snipe Retail Park, costs nothing.

What makes matters worse is the fact that this money goes to subsidise services in the borough that should be paid for by Council Tax. This is a very cynical move by the Labour controlled Council to make Council Tax artificially look good. Unfortunately, our traders in our Town Centres don't see this with the same smugness as some Labour Councillors seem to.

For the sake of our traders and town centres, it's time to cut these hugely excessive parking costs down to size.

Save Our Post Offices

Doesn't make for good reading does it?

In Tameside since 1999, more than 1 in 3 Post Offices have closed. Under a consultation due to start in June, many more are facing the axe. The worst part of this is that it comes with the blessing of the 3 sitting Labour MPs in Tameside.

Post Offices are a community centrepoint and in Tameside the Lib Dem FOCUS team are 100% behind the national campaign to make sure that our local Post Offices stay open.

Axe The Tax

Council tax is the most unpopular tax in Britain today - because it's the most unfair tax.

Across the UK people are being taxed heavily because of the house they live in, without taking into account how much they actually earn.

The Liberal Democrats want to change that by completely abolishing Council Tax and replacing it with a fairer system based on ability to pay.
